In Regards to the Once Upon a Time Episode "Birth"

Okay, first off, I apologize for being away for so long. I am swamped with schoolwork and barely have time for this kind of stuff. The reason I’m doing this blog post is that I would like to point out a few things about one of the recent episodes of Once Upon a Time. Yes, I watch the show and would like to share my analysis of the episode “Birth”. I must warn you that this will be spoiler-filled, so I advise against reading it unless you’ve seen the episode or you want to read this anyway.

The major twist is that Hook is a co-Dark One. I thank TV Tropes for the word “co-Dark One”. Even though he promised Emma that he’d love her no matter what, he turned on her once he learned the truth. This is something I call the “Vos Dynamic”. Yet again, there’ll be spoilers, but this time for the Star Wars book Dark Disciple. In Dark Disciple, Vos loved Ventress very much until he learned that she killed his Master. He turned to the dark side and wanted to kill her when she tried to rescue him from Serenno.

This is basically what happens with Hook. My reasoning behind the Vos Dynamic is when someone is betrayed by a person they care for, that victim will turn on them and hurt them at all costs. Hook certainly didn’t act like this before he knew he was a Dark One. I must make the argument here that just because a person is a Dark One doesn’t mean they have to act like it. It’s all a matter of psychology. When will that sink into the characters’ heads?!

Look, I’ve seen people with dark abilities before. This doesn’t necessarily make them evil unless they let it corrupt them. This is where I would like to point out a principle that’s also from Dark Disciple. I would like to call it the “Vostress Logic”. Near the end of the novel, Vos confesses that he turned to the dark side so he and Ventress could have a future together. This is basically the same reasoning Emma comes to when she claims she did everything for Killian. If this arc in Once Upon a Time turns out like Dark Disciple, then it’s not going to end well.

Don’t think that I’m ending this post on a rotten note. I’m going to leave you the links for every MLP review I’ve done since my last blog post (and when I say “last blog post”, I mean since the second half of Season 5 started).
